In January 2014, every household in England will receive a leaflet entitled ‘Better Information means better care’ from the Health & Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). The leaflet is designed to support and to raise public awareness and describes how information in patients medical records is used for purposes beyond the direct care of the patient, including the care data programme, research and risk stratification. The data will be stored centrally at (HSCIC).
Patients will have a minimum of four weeks to read the leaflet and to register their objection (opt-out) here at the surgery, before the first extract begins. Patients can do this either verbally or by completing an opt-out form. The data will contain personal information and will use identifiers such as date of birth, NHS number, postcode or gender to link it to information from other sources such as hospital to analyse patient care. The extracts will happen automatically.
You have a choice. If you are happy for your information to be used in this way you do not have to do anything. If you have any concerns or wish to prevent this from happening, please speak to the practice.
